When a coward by the name of Tom Chaney shoots down her father in cold blood, Mattie Ross decides on revenge. Mattie leaves home to find Tom Chaney with the help of the drunken Rooster Cogburn, the meanest U.S. Marshall she could find.

Ah, the simplicity of a well executed story. Mattie Ross is a stubborn, strong, independent, civilized woman of 14. She’s so strong-minded that it’s almost comical, but you admire her tenacity, because she’s actually quite frightening.

I learned more about Rooster and The Texan from the book, even though the new True Grit movie was surprisingly accurate. I listened to this edition as an audiobook, and many reviewers found the reader distracting, but I enjoyed her thoroughly.

Recommended for lovers of horse rides, westerns and classic storytelling!
